You can make a granny square blanket with any yarn. Caron One Pound is an acrylic #4 worsted weight yarn. The yarn specified in the pattern looks like a super bulky wool. So your blanket with the caron yarn would be quite a bit smaller--requiring more rounds to make it the finished size of the pattern. You would also need a smaller hook.

That's where the problem starts. I don't have a clue. I've run into this before when I wanted to try a pattern with a different size yarn and I haven't found any answer for a way to easily convert the quantities of yarn from one size to another.

You just change colors in the pattern you want.

I personally prefer using a K hook, and 2 Caron's One-Pounders makes a pretty good size afghan with a K hook.  JoAnn's has coupons almost every week, and sometimes 50% discount coupons!  That brings the price down to a very affordable $5 per skein!  Even with a 40% coupon, it's reasonable.
