Helmet, check. Beard hat, check. Moving on to CHAIN MAIL

Mothergooseberry

Question

Hello all,

I started crocheting before Christmas so I could make my granddaughter the popular little helmet and boy, was it an adventure! After I decided I needed some professional help, I joined Crochetville, and with the help of you crocheters here, I achieved that. I made her TWO helmets! WOO HOO! Well, when my son-in-law saw her helmets, he was a little hurt that I hadn't made him one, too. WHO KNEW, right? LOL. So I told him I'd make him one, too.....then he threw me a real curve by asking, "Could you make one of those with a beard instead?" With outward bravado and inward dread, I said "SURE!" And I did! I bought a pattern from a sweet lady on Ravelry and with her help, we got 'er done! He loves it! I posted pics in another thread if you want to see. You'll also see the pics of why I needed help! LOL!!!

NOW...I said all that to say this: This whole effort has been so I could learn some stuff and feel confident enough to tackle what I *really* have in mind....a chain mail hood and vest for that same granddaughter for her March 19 birthday. I'm now ready to purchase the yarn for that and need some professional advice about the type of yarn and how much I should buy.

Here's the two items I want to make:

(I know, that vest says it's knitted....but don't you all think it could be crocheted as well? I'm not sure this old Nana could learn another skill, my brain might explode!)

I have literally combed the Internet for WEEKS looking for a yarn that's as close to the one used in that chain mail hood as possible, and I *THINK* I have found one, but would like your opinions, please. Do you think this one would work? And also, if so, how much should I buy?

Thank you SO much, you all are so helpful and patient with us rookies!

Well, not professional, but...the helmet doesn't look like it's worsted weight to me - looks more like #3 crochet cotton might work.  The pattern should give a recommendation I'd think.

For the tunic, sure that could be crocheted.  I hope you haven't bought the pattern, since there is no magic formula to adapt a knitting pattern to crochet (unless you want to learn to knit...)  I'd measure a t-shirt or something similar for the size, and draw a sketch with the measurements.  It would just be 2 rectangles, a plain one for the back and for the front, a v-nec and a bottom cut-out shape.  It's knitted with a too-large needle to get the open look, not a fancy stitch at all.  A crocheted slip stitch done in a really large hook would look most like the knitted version.   Here's some slip stitch fabric patterns http://new.slipstitchcrochet.com/index.htm

The only caveat is that cotton stretches a lot while wearing (will go back to shape when washed) but this is a play garment so may not matter.  I've not used that particular yarn you've chosen, but the color looks great.

Are you going to make up your own pattern for the hood?  to have it look the same as the one pictured, i think you need a pretty fine yarn, sport or maybe fingering weight.  the yarn you linked to is worsted, which will make a much chunkier finished object.  (interesting that somebody here in MO is dyeing yarn from Italy!)

If you wanted to try a sport wt, this yarn http://www.shop.designingvashti.com/YARNS-New_c39.htm has just come out and is made specifically for crochet, and has some sheen but is not slippery to work with apparently.  There are some other posts around here about it.

For the vest, certainly you can crochet a vest.  You can't use a Knit pattern to make a crochet object (or vice versa) even tho there are books that claim to show how to do so.

Oh!  I didn't even realize the helmet wasn't a pattern.  Hmm.

Here's a generic hat recipe that works with any yarn.  http://www.crochetcabana.com/html/round_hat.html  You could start with that for the pattern for the top, then perhaps get ideas from the chunky one or the pic of the etsy one to finish it off.  I assume the chunky one was this http://seilerclan.blogspot.com/2007/11/crochet-chanimail-hood.html

Have you seen this yarn?  http://www.yarnspirations.com/yarns/metallic

The vest pattern is free and the photos should be helpful for shaping yours. But again, you cannot use a knitting pattern to make a crocheted object.

The gray worsted yarn from etsy will probably work for the vest----but so would any gray acrylic yarn you could find at a big box store.
