There is a knitting section you could post in if you want.

 

I would get some 4.5 mm and 5mm bamboo needles, to use with worsted weight yarn. The bamboo is less slippery than metal and you should have less problem with dropped stitches.

 

The videos and photos on knittinghelp.com are very good.

Agree - also I'd recommend getting circular needles not straights for your first practice needles.  You can use them to knit flat and in the round, but the needles are small, closer to crochet-hook size that you are used to.

 

I learned on straights 40 years ago, but have just crocheted since then until about 4 years ago and I decided to pick up knitting again with those same straights - was like working with telephone poles.  Circs are much more comfy--because the needles are short, the cable holds fabric off the needle, so you are not having to hold the fabric by your wrists on the needle as you would with long straights.
