On a hdc there is a "back bar"; i will try to find an illustration of it. For plain stitches, just ignore the back bar and stitch under the top two loops as you would on any other stitch.

You may find a pattern that has you do something with the back bar and in that case, follow the pattern directions.

So it's ment to be visible?

in your photo, it looks like the fabric is stretched or your tension is very loose.  the back bar shouldnt really be visible in between the stitches, because the stitches should be right next to each other.

is a photo of an unfinished sweater i made that is solid hdc.  sorry it is not more of a closeup but hopefully you can see the overall view of what the hdc looks like.

just for info, in this pattern there is an illustration of the back bar location http://www.knitandcrochetnow.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/303NC_HR.pdf
