Confused already dc

Lesley1978

Question

I am literally just starting out and in my book it say to go through the 2nd chain, yarn over and go through 1st loop leaving 2 loops in the hook, yarn over and go through both loops.....however, in YouTube it is totally different...yarn over, go through 4th chain so you now have 3 loops in hook etc....which is right?

Are they different in the uk and USA?

welcome to the ville! :hook

the difference in stitch names is confusing, but you will soon get used to it :-)

the reference section here is pretty helpful http://www.crochetville.com/community/topic/38393-usuk-stitch-name-comparison-table/

here is a tutorial that shows the basic stitches and gives both names for each http://www.love-crochet.com/tutorials/moving-on.html

my favorite online stitch reference  is Nexstitch , here is the tutorial for US dc http://www.nexstitch.com/v_double_crochet.html

Nexstitch uses US stitch names but it is very comprehensive as far as covering many  different stitches.

place the hook into the fourth chain from the hook, next chain three, then yarn over ,place the hook into the next stitch pull up a loop, then yarn over, then go through the loop..

UK and US are different stitches with the same name.  In the US the first one that you described is a sc.

The youtube one you described is a dc.  I believe that would be considered a treble in UK terms.
