Turtle blanket prop

tekmaster5000

Question

My nephew is due in January and I wanted to make this adorable blanket for his first pictures. I have found patterns for something similar but they are made with these big bulky hexagon or pentagonal motifs. This version seems sweeter.

It seems pretty simple: make the circular shapes and then attach them together. Right?

How would I go about making the green circular shapes?

Would I make a regular ring and bring up some dc up from the center?

Im pretty new so please redirect me if I am totally off on this here.

welcome to the ville :hook

here is a tutorial on how to crochet circles http://www.crochetcabana.com/html/round_howto.html

in your photo it looks to me like the shapes are actually pentagons, but I feel sure that circles would work for the green part.  You may then need to be aware of making the brown connecting rounds in a more angular shape in order for it all to fit together correctly.

Oh, I searched a bit and it looks like the pattern is for sale http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/gallery_item/elisabeth_77/97653

Now that you point it out. They do look like pentagons. I stumbled across the same thing but the price for the pattern is a little steep for me at $40, and I have had no experience reading patterns. I work off of videos and I'm afraid it would be a waste for me, at the moment.

So, I'm trying to do the best I can with the resources I have and make something similar.

I was thinking I could use this pentagon tutorial. It has the circular aspect we spoke about with the angular edging. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOsJ5SXDwuM, and then just change colors after the first row of dc around the circle. And do 1 dc row of brown. Connect them all, n do a row of dc and then a row of sc all the way around in green?

Does that sound like it would work? Are there any modifications I should make?

the pattern doesn't seem to have a price listed.  the $40 is for a completed set.  I'd be surprised if she was also charging $40 for the pattern, tho I guess you are supposed to contact her directly to learn the price.

The pattern is $5.95. The link posted seems to go to an expired/sold listing for it but if you click "visit shop" at the bottom of the page it will take you to the main page of her Artfire shop. The turtle blanket pattern is a couple pages in. Or in her profile on the right, you can click through to her etsy shop, the pattern is available there as well (same price).
