Working from charts ?

LexiPowell

Question

I have never worked from a chart before (other than to cross stitch). I understand that each symbol represents a different color, and that each square is a stitch...but other than that, I am lost. Can any explain how to work from a chart in crochet (just reg. crochet, not filet)? I would really appreciate any help!

On the off chance you were't talking about doilys and those kind of charts but was talking about graphs here's what little I know.

You crochet it back and forth just like normal.

Each graph row is a crochet row.

One row is read left to right, second row is read right to left, and so on.

You color change at the markings keeping yarn at the back of your work.

If you're using more than two or three colors, it's best to put them on bobbins.

For me, I like to count the rows, write them out and read from that. It's easier for me. It would like something like this:

5 white, 5 red, 3 black

Others prefer working off the chart. It's all what you're comfortable with.

I'm sure some one else will be along to add to this.

That is if this is what you were talking about. LOL

Up to this point, I agree with Empress Busy Bee. As you change colors, you will crochet over the one you are dropping at least 2 stitches and no more than 6. This way you yarn is anchored and you are ready to pick it up in the next row. You also do not have to weave in ends.

One other thing, each block going across is a stitch.

I make an extra copy of the graph, that way I can mark off what I have finished, and I will know what row I am on.

Feel free to contact me if I can help you more.

The most important thing is to relax and do what you are most comfortable with.:hook
