Pineapple shawl about to become pineapple upside down cake... HELP

Noel Woods

Question

I've been working on this shawl pattern for about a week. I've made it all the way to the last line and have run into a snag. The last line makes NO sense to me. Maybe you guys can help. I am going to post a link to the pattern, as well as the specific line I am having trouble. This is a chair back pattern that can be made into a shawl.

I have made it all the way down where you finish off the five bottom pineapples, this is the last line... I understand the first part of the row, but when it gets to "ch 1, sl st back in ch-2 of last shell, ch 1, 2 dc where last 2 dc were made. Fasten off." I get completely lost... If anyone has worked this pattern and can offer some help, that would be great.

Last row: Shell over shell, ch 4, sc in loop, ch 4, 2 dc in next shell,

ch 1, sl st back in ch-2 of last shell, ch 1, 2 dc where last 2 dc were made. Fasten off.

Oh I think I get it!  if only I can Say it.  ok you have made half of the shell at 3.  Now chain one, then slip stitch in the chain space in the first shell, where you have marked #1.  Now chain one, then do the 2 dc back over in the chain space at #3 to finish that shell.  It brings the end of the pineapple together.

I'll give it a shot and see how it comes out!

Ahh, here is the finished product! I was able to work the end of those pineapples without turning, it just took me a few tries to get it right.

Once again, if you're using IE, these pictures may not load properly.

I'm so happy I found this thread!  My grandmother always crocheted doilies, and I have 2 dozen snowflakes on my Christmas tree that she sent me during Desert Storm.  I want to make this shawl for her!  i saw it on someone's blog (that I linked to from here) but couldn't remember where I'd seen it.  I've never made a pineapple, so I'm sure I'll need to reference your pictures!

Alright, here's what I did.

After the 2dc (or half a shell) I chained 1, turned the work, slipped into the ch 2 area of the first shell in this row (the one previously labled #1), chained 1, turned the work, made two double crochet where the other half of the shell would have gone (In the area previously labled as #3)

Here is a pic of how it turned out: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B92AV7PB5cuHTFU3ME9pbGVzdkU/edit  - again if you're using IE, it may not load properly.

This closed the bottom of the pineapple together. It's not the prettiest closure. However, I think that will be covered up with the picot edging "here is a link for the edging, if you're interested: http://web.archive.org/web/20071016081449/http://www.angelfire.com/folk/celtwich/PineFan.html "

I am going to leave enough yarn on the ends of the pineapples to go back and fix it, in the event that I've done it incorrectly, and someone who has worked the pattern, hops on and enlightens me.

Alrighty... here are two pictures I took of the shawl.

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B92AV7PB5cuHd3hiMTdaa3JhNG8/edit

The close up picture that is numbered is of the area I am having trouble with.

1 is the shell over shell

2 is the chain 4, sc in loop, chain 4

3 is the 2 dc - which is followed by this part I don't have a clue how to work.

Last row: Shell over shell, ch 4, sc in loop, ch 4, 2 dc in next shell,
ch 1, sl st back in ch-2 of last shell, ch 1, 2 dc where last 2 dc were made. Fasten off.

magiccrochetfan you are correct. There are five pineapples at the bottom and you work them seperately.

so there are five pineapples that hang down below the rest of the piece.  I'm guessing you finish off each pineapple separately?  Thus are you working back and forth on a single pineapple?  That probably doesn't help at all, i am just trying to visualize it.

I have a seperate link for the edging. I found the pattern on ravelry and the edging was linked in the comments.

This pattern is also on a Yahoo group, Celt's Vintage Crochet, and I'm sorry to say that your link is completely missing the following section, which is several lines for the edging.  It's too involved for me to copy it here per the guidelines, but you might want to join the Yahoo Group (it's a wonderful group if you are a doily or lace fan).

Here is a picture of the original pattern-the second pic is of the arm rest of what was originally an antimacassar set.

2 dc in next shell,
ch 1, sl st back in ch-2 of last shell, ch 1, 2 dc where last 2 dc were made

I've made doilies before where they had you work backwards a little then forwards again, but this sounds like it would just make a knot.

Welcome to the ville :hook

it would help a lot to see a picture of it! too bad the slide show is no longer available.   i think this pattern may have been discussed here before so you might try searching for old threads.
