crochet in mystery--what is a tidy?

I love mysteries, especially old mysteries. I was rereading 'The Third Murderer,' one of three short stories in a book entitled "The Asey Mayo Trio" by Phoebe Atwood Taylor (originally published 1943). On p. 5 our hero, Asey Mayo, The Codfish Sherlock, says to his cousin Jennie: " Last batch had a recipe for orange cake, an' a blueprint for a crocheted tidy."

What is a crocheted tidy? I must know! Is it like a cosy?

Thank you for the info! I realized yesterday morning that I do not have a dictionary at home, so I had to wait till I got to the office to look tidy up, but there it was! It was great to see a photo, so thanks for the link, sjkmaurice.

Oh, and SheCrochets, doe your husbancd like her stories as Phoebe Atwood Taylor or Alice Tilton better? Me, I love 'em both, but I laugh so much more with those Tilton ones. Bill Shakespeare, Lt. Haseltine--I just love those books! Wish I lived on that Cape Cod. Patty
