adding fleece to afghan

is it possible to use fleece on the back of an afghan for added warmth?could you just cut a piece the right size make holes that line up with the outside edges of the afghan then do the border through them both?

I've seen people do this two ways --

 

* machine stitch the fleece to the back of the blanket, just by going through the stitches

 

* cut a square of fleece to the same size as the afghan pre-edging. punch holes around the border, and then crochet the border into both.

 

Normally both require also stitching the center of the fleece to the blanket because the two come apart in the middle...
