Advice For First Freeform Crochet Piece

To me, the great thing about freeform is that you can do whatever you want--crochet it all or sew together, make it dense and "scrumbly" or open and lacy.

Jenny Dowde's book Freeform Knitting and Crochet has some exercises to get you started and good overall info on things like color.

James Cosh has put a lot of info from workshops he did in the past with Sylvia Walters (they popularized the freeform idea) on a website; you can print out worksheets http://www.crochet.nu/scjwc/workshops/index.html

the website has links to lots of galleries and other info.

Well I'm sure my mental image is not the same as yours, but I can see where a lily pad theme would have lots of possibilities. (Actually my need to have a mental image before I start is the main reason, i think, that I don't do more freeform.) Anyway, I know you'll have fun with it!
