Can you understand this pattern?

I don't understand the beginning of this pattern. How many are you supposed to chain?

 

Then it says to "ch in second ch from hook"....I have never chained inside a chain...could this be an error?

 

I think it is a cute afghan...just need to figure it out!

Darnit I lost the whole post!! Ok, here goes again...

 

Chain a multiple of 3 to get the width you want (I chained 54 for the lapghans I did), plus 2 chains for a total of 56 chains. Then sc in the second chain from hook (yes, ch is a typo). I did a chain 3 for the next row where it says to ch 2(3) for the double crochets.
