Having trouble with the HASCARF (help)

Hello, I am making Dot's Hascarf for my daughter. On row 41, it says to crochet in the back loops. Are they talking about the 12 crochet, or the long part of the scarf. I really want to get this off to my daughter. Can anyone help?

Hi Berni, Dot is talking about the 12 stitches of the scarf. If you look closely the chains across the top have two sides. You crochet along on side and keep going right around to the other side and this forms the beginning circle for the top of the hat. Hope this helps!)
