Fringe help

Lavender

Question

I have faced this problem everytime I make fringe for a shawl for afghan....But this time I want to solve the problem because it's a gift for someone.

I knot strands of yarn into the last row of stitches to make the fringe....problem is the strands become very curled...they look like mop-head! I want to make the fringe straight. Any ideas? I have tried ironing the fringe :hyper but the strands are straight for a while, then get curly again! :th

plz help.

I know it's recommended to only use the yarn from the outer part of the skein so it'll be straight, but I'm such a penny pincher, I can't bear to not use all of a skein when fringing. What I do, is spray the fringe with a water spray bottle, then steam it with a steam iron. While the yarn is hot and wet, I comb through it with my fingers. I've never had a problem with it going back to kink after doing this.
