help with filet crochet

i have simple question , just started with filet crochet easy project and instead of little squares im getting little rectangles and my whole project is longer than wider what gives to whole thing funny stretch look.what to do?

I had exactly the same problem when I did my first filet crochet. What I did was create a few swatches and figure out how many chains wide do I need to work to get a square.

 

What I figured was that 3dc is not as wide as it is tall. So I made it 4dc each. Came out pretty square-ish. You might wanna try a swatch.

 

You might want to work with a thicker hook, but I am not sure if it will not scale both ways :eek2

Another thing you can try is to do hdc instead of dc. They're just a tad bit shorter. Chain up 2 rather than 3 at the beginning of a row.
