How much sport weight yarn for an afghan

I want to buy Knit Picks Merino Style in "Moss" ( https://www.knitpicks.com/cart/CartProductShow.asp?from=0&item=23463 )to make an afghan, but I can't really come up with how much yarn. I don't have a pattern, I figure I will do something basic like a ripple and i want it fairly large: 36-40" wide and 66" or a little more long. It is for practical use more than just decoration (naps on the couch, doncha know!)

 

I Googled "how much yarn, etc." but didn't find a good answer. Can anyone help me with this? TIA! Cecilia

Try to find a similar size afghan pattern and see how much yarn they suggest. Good Luck:cheer

Well, for a worsted weight ripple afghan I used 54 ozs. of variegated yarn. However, sport weight is not as heavy so you would assuredly need more than that. Maybe 75 ozs? I can't give a definitive answer but that should be close. Of course, a different type pattern might take a different amount. A ripple needs more yarn than a straight pattern.
