I hae never dye wool before - help!

You definitely need vinegar for food coloring. The only other thing you really need is heat to set the dye. I heat set my food coloring/Kool Aid dyed yarn in the microwave. Here's a really good tutorial that might help you: http://www.knitty.com/issuespring07/FEATdyeyourown.html

 

There really are no hard and fast rules for dyeing--I think the best way to learn is just to dive right in and try things. (At least, that's what worked for me.) You can almost always overdye your yarn if it comes out awful. :)

You need a sense of adventure and vinegar, food coloring and wool. Soak the wool well in vinegar water, making sure there are no bubbles on the surface of the wool because they mean the natural lanolin in the wool isn't letting the water saturate it.

 

You can drop the food coloring on from the bottle if you want varied colors, or soak a whole skein in the same color for a solid.
