stuck on granny square... please help

I got this pattern from the leisure arts 35 granny square sampler #2755

 

I want to use up a bunch of yarn and practice my skills using this leaflet-I went straight to #16 and am stuck on the 2nd round.

 

I always end up short when attempting this round. After the 1st round there are 20dc but in the second round each bit only adds up to 1ch spc and 3 dc's- Is there an error in the pattern or can anyone dumb it down for me?

We dont all have access to the pattern so maybe you can post a little more info on the pattern so we can try it to see whare you may be having a problem.

If you do not wish to post more of the pattern here, maybe you can PM it to me and I can give it a try.
