yarn weights question

Recommended Posts

Hi! I come from a place where cotton thread size 10 are what crocheters here normally use. We also have some yarns available but they are all acrylic used for other crafts. These types of yarn are labelled S (for thinner type), M (for medium) and L (for bulky). My question is what is worsted weight, sport weight, chunky, etc? I try to convert the patterns I see on the web to thread but sometimes it's so frustrating since I have to guess especially when the pattern doesn't tell you the gauge per inch. I would like to buy some nice yarns or trade for them but don't have any idea as to the weight listed when I see one that I like. :huh I really would like to try crocheting other types of yarn aside from thread. :blush

If you're interested, I can send you some snippets of each weight, so you can see them for yourself.

Worsted, unfortunately, varies quite a bit. It's fairly consistent when it comes to acrylic and wool, but then has quite a range when it comes to novelty yarns.

Send me an e-mail or a private message if you're interested.
