Belt length

I got inspired to make a belt for DD (who's been looking for a cool belt) after seeing the really cool one that Tiffany made & posted about in her blog...

 

I'm not working from a pattern, just doing rows of sc with a strand of RH Tiki and a strand of Aunt Lydia's denim held together. I'm working with short little rows (not from one end of the belt to the other) so I have until the end to figure out how long it should be...I've got about 25" done so far. The pattern that Tiff linked to was for one that's 50" long, and I'm wondering if I should go that long or not. DD is about a size 5, so I'm thinking (she's away at school, so can't measure her) she probably has about a 24-26" waist??? Do you all think 50" (before fringe) would be too long, and if so what might be a good size to have a comfortable amount of room to tie it?

Stacey, I wear a size 5 jeans and my waist is 30 1/2"...when wearing a crochet belt, I would wear it tied in a knot (not a bow), so I think about 44" would be good? Unless she likes her belts to hang real low.

I came back hoping someone had answered since I just hit the 42" mark and wasn't sure how much further to go. This is a great help!
