Sewing 101

I am not a sewer at all and have the biggest problems with buttons so I'm nervous about getting into "lining" bags and such. I am going to make a nice purse that I want to have lined and I could use some basic tips.

 

How do I know how much fabric to buy?

What kinds of fabrics work well for linings?

What's the easiest way to sew a lining in?

How in the world do you start? With thread a knot doesn't seem to work so I never can seem to get it started right. (Same question for finishing off.)

I know how to whipstitch but that's about it.

Awhile back I asked about adding lining to a bag, someone gave me the BEST site! Here is the link below..they have bag lining instructions, as well as basic handsitiches, adding magnectic snaps and basic knitting stitches. Check it out!
