Yarn bobbins are usually pieces of plastic that are H shaped and about 2" high (though the size and shape may vary). You can wrap small amounts of yarn around them to use when doing multi color work, such as a graph. It is easier than working with balls of yarn as they are easier to control and will not tangle as easily.
