:hook Your centre is not really getting tighter, it just appears to be. The outside edge is getting looser.

:think A granny square does not sit well when it gets too big.

:think How is your Granny Square done? Is it the simple groups of 3DCs with 2 groups in the corners and CH1 between the groups?

:hook If it is, simply leaving out the CH1 will make it sit better.

:hook If you want a large square, you are better making 4 smaller squares, joining them together, then doing a few rows of a simple edging to finish off.
