DC2tog 6 times would involve 12 stitches from the row below--combine stitches 1&2 into 1, stitches 3&4 into another 1, and so on, until 12 stitches become 6 'togethers'.

Edited to clarify, if it wanted to turn 6 stitches into 1, it would have said dc6tog.  There is undoubtedly a fit and appearance reason to 'gather the stitches' more gradually.
