Baby blanket sizing

Hello! 

   I an making a granny rectangle baby blanket for a new arrival in February. My question is there an average size for a baby blanket given as a gift. First time making baby items and I've looked online but there are hundreds of sizes listed and am now confused on sizing. 

Any help would be appreciated.

I had a great nephew & niece come along a few years ago, and chose to make blankets for them that were 36"x48" which the source I'd looked up said that was 'crib size', I assume that meant that was what a store-bought crib blanket would be.

This site gives more suggestions for baby-use blankets than the one I used back then (and a different size for crib blankets, hmm)
