I think I may just give up on this pattern, but I'm confused about where I went wrong. It looks like the black shows too much in the red area, but I tried to change colors appropriately (making new loop, picking up the new color to complete the sc, and carrying the black yarn along the top of the sc's).
It was this pattern I tried to make - the Orangeback Spider:
