This is sort of the right shape, and if you are feeling adventurous it wouldn't be too hard to make it bigger (I can't quite tell what the scale is in your photo.)  Personally I'd leave that handle button detail off and just SC-seam the ends together at either the center bottom (with the seam 'bump on the inside of the purse.  https://www.anniescatalog.com/knitandcrochetnow/patterns/detail.html?pattern_id=243&series=2  You have to sign up, but it's free.  This calls for aran/worsted weight yarn.

This is closer to yours  http://gurmanfravor.blogspot.com/2009/09/robaato-messenger-bag.html, also would be even easier to scale up or down as it's just rectangles--free on a blog.  - edit, this calls for fingering weight so it will be fewer stitches if you go for a larger scale yarn.
