Welcome to the 'ville!

The answer is 'it depends on a lot of factors'.   There is no 'rule' of how many chains requires to span a specific distance for different weights of yarn, because it depends on the your personal gauge (and the designers'!) and the stitch pattern.

What pattern are you making?  This would help fine tune the help we can give you.  Don't post the pattern here, but if there is a link to the pattern or to a pic of what the end product looks like, it could help us steer you in the right direction, or maybe find a pattern for a similar item designed for your yarn.

If you are making a simple 50-stitch wide rectangle that needs to end up being X inches wide,  you can make a chain X inches long, plus a few extra chains, work across that and pick any extra chains out later.  Anything more complicated than this, if you are trying to make something the same size with bigger yarn, may require a complete redesign.
