Star Wars cocoon-style afghan for a 5 year old boy

He loves his baby sister's mermaid tail afghan and has asked for one like it with a Star Wars theme.  I've seen some adorable baby cocoons on Pinterest with R2D2 and BB8, but do not know how to size them up for an older child.  The patterns are for sale, but I've never used a pattern from the designer and am uncertain as to the quality of her instructions.   Thanks for any advice!  Oh, the character doesn't have to be one of the droids 🙂
