Just looking at it, I would say that you need to do the stitches inside the [ ] 5 times, but it doesn't say where to put them.  It would really help to know the name of the pattern, or at least one or two rows of the directions.

These are the rows before it:

1.   Using C1, and a size “Q” hook, ch 4

2.   DC 5 sts in 1st ch, ch 3, turn (6)

3.   DC in same st as ch 3, [2DC] X 5, ch 3, turn (12)

4.   DC in same st as ch 3, DC next st, [2DC, DC] X 5, ch 3, turn (18)

5.   DC in same st as ch 3, DC next 2 sts, [2DC, DC 2 sts] X 5, ch 3, turn (24)

From then it repeats with increases in size.

Welcome to Crochetville!

The 2DC is an increase, so you'll do them in the same stitch. The number after DC means to make a DC that many times.

For example [2DC, DC 2 sts] 5 times is...

  1. 2DC in the same stitch
  2. DC in the next stitch, DC in the next stitch
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 a total of 5 times.

[2DC, DC 4 sts] 5 times is similar. Just add 2 more DC stitches to step 2.
