Thanks for the link, that's a pretty doily.

 

You notice from round 2, instead of making a complete chain loop at the end of the round, you chain half the stitches and make an increasingly large stitch into the first stitch of the round? (round2 = DC, round3=TR, round4=DTR)

 

This is done so you start the next round at the top of a (functional) chain loop, that isn't made up all of chains, but rather chains + a tall stitch about the same size as the number of chains.

 

For round 3 you ch 1 and SC into the DC

For round 4 you ch 1 and sc into theTR

But in round 5, instead of ch 1 and sc, you ch4, and 4,2tr, ch3,3tr all into the 1 DTR that was the last stitch made in round 4.
