Welcome to Crochetville!

Is this the pattern .......... http://www.redheart.com/free-patterns/aran-toggle-wrap?  Does the video explain?

What row are you on?  Typically slanting work comes from adding a stitch at the beginning and/or end of a row.  It's important to count stitches.  Does your row have the same number of stitches as the pattern and as the previous row?

Here's a handy chart for starting and ending rows with various row heights...

When a turning chain is not counted as a stitch, start in the same stitch as the turning chain.  End in the last stitch.  Don't crochet into the previous row's turning chain.

When a turning chain is counted as a stitch, start in the next stitch.  End in the top of the turning chain from the previous row.

SC: turning chain = 1 chain.  It's never counted as a stitch.

HDC: turning chain = 1 or 2.  Sometimes it's counted as a stitch and sometimes not.  The pattern will tell you if it is or isn't counted.

DC: turning chain = 2 or 3.  It's always counted as a stitch.

TR: turning chain = 3 or 4.  It's always counted as a stitch.

Note: Patterns normally have the higher count for a turning chain, but some people use the lower count because their tension is tighter and the higher count may cause a gap.

I read it a couple of times.  You're supposed to count the first 2 chains as a stitch.  DC into the 3rd chain and every chain after that.  You should have 147 DC stitches + the first chain = 148 stitches on row 1.

Granny Square quite often recommends adding a few chains more than you need.  Then the extra chains can just be undone at the end.  The advantage is that you're not short chains.

on Ravelry, the comments and project notes may be helpful http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/aran-toggle-wrap

googling for "aran toggle wrap" I foound this video, not sure which exact questions it addresses but it says she clears up the confusion---OK I watched it, she discusses the basic construction which does seem helpful but doesn't talk about stitch count.  but I agree with Redrosesdz about the count, it should work as written.

seems like it would have been nice if they linked to this on the pattern page!
