Substitute for Criss-Cross Stitch (DC)

I'm working a pattern that calls for a cross stitch or criss-cross stitch -- not sure which is the correct name. The row starts with a DC, skip stitch, DC in next stitch, then DC in skipped stitch, so the two DC's form an 'X'.  I REALLY don't like this stitch. I'd like to substitute a different stitch in it's place. It would need to be the same height for it to work with the pattern, but I'd like to use something that would also create an interesting texture instead of resorting to a plain DC stitch. Any suggestions?

you could alternate front and back post stitches.  they will be a tiny bit shorter than a regular dc st.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was unable to access the site all day today, so by the time I got back in, I was 3/4ths of the way through the cross-stitch section. 5 more rows and I'm done!  I'll keep that in mind for the next time though.
