slip stitch help

Question

Hi folks. I am a leftie so not sure if that's the problem, but when I slip stitch, my sl st tends to be raised and sit out from the pattern (crocheting in the round)... does this happen with everyone or is there a way to fix it. I have tried pulling everything right but no matter what I do I can't seem to get it sitting tighter in.

I think if you pull the slip stitch tight, you won't be able to poke your hook in when you need it for the next round - actually I try to remember to keep them loose-ish, because I tend to make slip stitches a little tight.

It's actually not the joining slip stitch itself that sticks out, it's the top (front) loop of the stitch before it.  Normally you skip this ( I know it sounds counter intuitive, but swatch and see ).  If you use this stitch instead of skipping it, it looks better but you'll need to amend the pattern to not add to the stitch count:  do a stitch 2 tog over the last stitch you'd normally make in the round and that normally skipped stitch.
