Yarn balls: which yarn is it?

How do you mark your balls to remember which manufacturer and specific color and weight? I have been winding the beginning yarn end around the info, but I have to wait until the whole ball is done in order to find out what to buy to match it (or unwind the ball). For instance, I have 3 different 'whites' ...

i recently got a lot of colors and i took the bands of and sewed a short piece of yarn to each band so that later I can be sure which color is which.  i then stuck the folded up band into the opening at the end of the skein, since i haven't got down to the point of winding it into balls yet.  

 

you could unwind your balls, take out the folded band, rewind the ball and put the folded band under the last few wraps of yarn.  if you think it may fall out, put the yarn and band into a ziplock bag to keep them together.

Are there any markers, or beads, that you could slip over the yarn, on which you could write the info?

After I wind the yarn into balls I put the labels back on - folding and taping them down as necessary so that they fit over the ball nicely.
