helmet with brush

Hi,

 

I was wondering if anyone can help me how to do the red "brush" on helmet. Dont know what the correct expression is but it is the red thing on this picture:

i think that is simply pieces of yarn sewn onto the helmet, looks like there are a lot of pieces very close together so that it forms a thick "mane".  I would use a yarn with a lot of body like Red Heart Super Saver.

It's called a mohawk. It looks like it could be done like fringe or like  rugs you pull yarn through the stitches  to get the shape you want.
