Color change question

How do you color change and keep things nice and even? I've watched some vidoes but for some reason my color changes still come out looking off. I always think I understand but when I actually try it, it still comes out weird.

Is that a project worked in the round with no 'seam', so to speak?

Yes, I used this pattern http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/dz-easy-beanie and even watched the video tutorial but I'm bad at self teaching. I'm missing something but not sure what.

 

I thought I had it for the second hat but thankfully it's hardly noticeable on my husband's hat. The pink/yellow was a practice hat.

 

I'm currently attempting to make a very colorful jellyfish and running into the same problem with the color changes.

HI,

did you try a slip-stitch to join rounds and then join new color.  Some patterns say work in the round, but when I join, i do a slip stitch (because it makes the round even, then i join with the new color.

No, I just added in to the next stitch. I'll try slip stitching next time though, that sounds like what I might be missing.
