Finishing a Knit Fabric with Crochet

I just bought some beautiful open weave knit fabric from my local fabric store. I'm making a simple shrug and want to finsh the edge with crochet. There are small (C or D hook would probably fit through) regularly spaced openings and I am thinking I can crochet around the edge using these holes. I don't know how to start, though -- would I treat the holes in the fabric like a base chain?

I think I'd go around it once in a single and work from there. Might give it a more finished and cohesive look.

Just guessing though, it's hard to say without seeing it.
