Maybe you could work out approximately the size of the yarn from the hook size to be used and the tension recommended, then find a yarn which will work to that tension.

You can sometimes work it out by the number of CH used to start the piece. This will give you a bit of a hint if you have already done something similar.

The other thing that pops into my head is to get a ball of the yarn you would like to use and using the appropriate hook for that yarn, do a wee bit of the pattern.

You might just be lucky enough to get it right the first time, if not, it will tell you if the yarn is too thick or too thin.

Hope there is something here to help.

Have fun.
