Trouble with pattern purchased from Ebay....

I purchased a crochet pattern for a poncho from Ebay and have followed it to a tee...used correct size hook...used the type of yarn it recommended, etc. The poncho is supposed to fit an adult but I'll be lucky if it fits my 3 year old great niece!
The pattern gave no gauges or finished dimensions. I emailed the seller and asked if the starting chain was correct but I've received no reply. *sigh*
I was just curious if anyone else has had this problem with patterns purchased from Ebay?
