Joining squares

Well I've been peeking around and noticed some comments in Crochet-Alongs about joining squares using a method other than whipstitching. I haven't been able to find instructions...my excuse is that I'm new and this is a huge community! Could someone post a link or two or hints to finding posts with help on joining squares?
