Placing Ears on Hat

I am making the baby hat using pattern from Womans Day Special Knitting and Crocheting (this past issue) the hat has ears that are to be placed on top. Oh, pattern from this magazine is number 27, the picture looks so cute, but now that I am ready to place these ears on, I think it looks stupid, I am suppose to flatten and attach, the directions do not say just where to do this, any suggestions. I think that any where I place them the ends will show. Help fast, I want to mail this soon.

hmmmm, i'm looking at it and i wonder:

 

are they long enough that they would meet in the center on top? or will there be space in between????

 

 

as far as lay it flat, i take that to mean, lay it down in the way you want it to flop over and whip stitch it down?????

I am in Florida now 5:55, you must have just responded, so funny, I was just again trying a way to put these darn ears on, No there is no special place to put them and yes they are longer than the hat. I just might places some bowes over the area that I have to stich them down. I just can not believe they would make a pattern so stupid looking, the hat is cute the ears just don't go on right. But thanks for helping.
