A little History: Doily was D'Oyley

Recommended Posts

I finally went to the Gutenberg site and did a search on "Crochet". I was disappointed to see only 1 book, but what a nice book.

Lots of different patterns for filet, doilies, collars, laces, edgings, and beaded purses. The doily seemed to be called D'Oyley back then. There didn't seem to be a publication date anywhere that I could see.

Loved the names of some of the threads:

  • Brooks' Great Exhibition Prize Goat's-head Valenciennes Cottons
  • two knots of Russia silk braid
  • No. 1 Valenciennes Thread.

Best of all, knitting took a back seat to crochet! There were a couple of knitting instructions and patterns, the the rest of the book was crochet.

To see it, go here and then go to Download Book to look at it in its entirety.
