Joining pieces neatly?

Does anyone else have trouble with the finished look of their joined pieces?

 

Such as, a tote bag where you've attached the crocheted handles?

 

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. What's the best technique for this sort of thing?

I use my sewing machine lots of times, depends on the purse and handle.
