I need help with granny square afghan using pattern listed here

This is a pattern that my grandmother used, so I have been told. I just started crocheting and grandma is gone so I need help.

 

Anyway read this and I will tell you where I am stuck at:

chain 5

slipstitch

chain 3, 2 trebles into ring.

(chain 2. 2 trebles into ring) 3 times.

1 half treble in 3rd chain from first 3 chain.

 

then

 

round 2

chain 3. 2 trebles in same space.

chain 1 (3 trebles. chain2. 3 trebles) into next chainspce. chain 1.

and so on.

 

The problem I have (if I can explain it) is that then I chain 3, 2 trebles, 2 chain, 3 trebles and come back around to where this 3 ch starts, it doesn't match up with the round before.

I end up with being able to 3 tr but then there is a large space before I can get to the 3 ch that started it.

 

Does this make any sense? If not I am sorry. I should maybe try and post pics of what I end up with and then see if you can help me.

Is it possible that your grandmother's pattern is based on the European tr? Because if it is then by converting everything to American it works. So the tr becomes dc. And the htr becomes hdc.
