Pattern for Patons Tufty yarn?

I have three balls (50g each) of Patons Tufty in a purply colour passed down to me from my grandma.

 

I just tried to crochet a beanie using an 8mm hook and it's not working. I'll need a heaps bigger hook to do the beanie, I reckon.

 

Does anyone have any ideas what to do with this yarn other than a beanie or scarf? I have only three balls so the awesome jacket I saw online is out of the question.

 

It's quite an odd yarn - rope like between these purply tufts!

I am sorry. I can't get the image inside my head based on the yarn's description. Can you post a picture of the yarn itself please ? I can think of a dishcloth, a square or place mat. I am not sure if it's enough for socks, a hat or mittens.

Thanks for replying Diane - did you notice we spell our name the same way! I always find Dianes who spell it with two 'n's.
