How to stiffen yarn

Question

I want to make something that is 3D and I want to make it stay 3D without stuffing it.

 

is it possible to stiffen the yarn? and if there is what should i use and what type of yarn should i use.

 

The shape I am going for is more or less like a diamond shape

You'll also need a mold of some sort so the piece keeps its shape while drying. For a 3-D diamond like in your picture, you'd probably have to make it in 2 pieces, soak it in your stiffener (Aileen's Stiffy is great stuff; you can also use white glue thinned with water, though it tends to yellow as time goes on. You can make a paste out of water and cornstarch, or sugar & water, but both of those can wilt if they get wet and the sugar water stiffener can attract flies during humid days), put each piece over the mold, dry, then stick the pieces together.
