Hi Kathleen, I saw that pic a while ago and the top of my foot still bears the scar where my jaw dropped onto it! I was given a book once on the history of crochet and I remember reading that the small pieces of pattern were sewn onto brown paper and passed around the family or village communities. A major project like that was probably the work of several rather than one person. Also because of large families living in the same house, the women would sit in the evening and work together on a large item or individually on smaller things. Don't quote me on that as I'm dredging it up from memory but I think thats right.
