repurposing antique crochet

I want to use crochet work, made by my Great Grandmother, in a new project. Can anyone help with the correct procedure for cutting panels or trim into the size I need. I expect I must catch, with thread, the crochet work on each side of the proposed cut, but would appreciate any advice or help offered.
