Help with Stitch Skip

I am working on a shawl and I came upon a row that has stumped me. 

On Row 4, after I have chained 4, put 2 double crochets in the same stitch, and chain 2, it asks me to "skip (2 double crochet & 1 chain)". Then it asks to "1 single crochet in 1 single crochet". I don't understand how to do either one of them. Row 4 in general is confusing to me. Can anyone help? Thank you so much.

Skip what is in the parentheses.  After skipping those, the next stitch should be a single crochet, and into that stitch you make a single crochet.
